Radishes, lettuce, chard, squash, potatoes, carrots, parsley, tomatoes, peas, and cabbage are among the vegetables that have already been harvested from the school gardens in several rural communities of the Tarija Department in southern Bolivia. Thanks to the implementation of modern irrigation systems, the gardens are now producing their first crops.
This harvest is the result of the
The new school in Chalana Vieja was now officially inaugurated in a joyful community celebration. Until then, the small village in the department of Tarija in southern Bolivia had only one small classroom and an additional makeshift room for teaching.
Students, teachers, community members, the mayor, and representatives of the foundation all attended the inauguration ceremony. As
Children’s Day is celebrated in Bolivia every year on April 12 and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting children’s rights and supporting their development. Fundación Pueblo also used this occasion not only to give children a special day within its projects, but also to help them learn more about their rights.

This month UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, has presented its Global Education Monitoring Report 2026. It states that more than 273 million children do not have proper access to education wordwide.

In February, we were able to formally complete two infrastructure projects in the communities of Chorokepiau and Tentapiao in the Chaco region. These projects represent the most visible outcome of our efforts to improve the living and learning conditions of children in these small rural communities. After last year’s national elections, all mayors and municipal councilors in Bolivia will be newly elected in March. Who are the candidates, and what are their proposals and programs for the coming years? In the large cities, these questions are analyzed extensively in public debate. Trouble, social unrest and natural disaster tend to dominate news in and from Bolivia. So, the results of a recent poll are quite surprising: More than 80% of Bolivians expect changes for the better in the coming year.

The public University of Tarija has been our co-operation partner for several years now. For students in their final years, we offer internships in rural communities where thy can apply what they have learnt to the benefit of the rural population. The students are mainly engaged in our water-supply projects in the extremely dry and hot Chaco Region. That imposes considerable challenges to these
Our new program to improve the quality of education in rural schools in the Department of Tarija is not limited to upgrade and equip school infrastructure in communities that send their kids to our “Weekly Boarding with Indigenous Host Mothers” in Tantaguazu. This year, for example, we are able to improve the water supply of the village of Tentapiao.
Lacking safe and clean water,
In Chorokepiau, a remote village in southern Bolivia near Tarija, children attend their primary school in a precarious hut. To ensure that education remains possible, Fundación Pueblo, joint by the local county, supports the construction of a new, safe and child-friendly school building. This new building not only brings better learning conditions, but also helps the children get prepared more effectively
This month, Bolivia commemorates the 200th anniversary of its independence, the “Bicentenario”. The Village Foundation takes part in the celebrations, each of its 3 locations. In Yanacachi, our historical headquarters, we inaugurated a new billboard greeting our visitors at the village entrance. It highlights the ancient role of Yanacachi as the “Gateway to the Yungas Region of La Paz”.
