Strengthening human rights defenders in the fight against illegal mining
Wednesday December 11th, 2024
Our project “Strengthening human rights defenders in the fight against illegal mining” is specifically committed to protecting the environment and human rights in the municipality of Yanacachi in the Yungas region of La Paz. The aim is to contribute to strengthening an informed public. Supported by funds from the Human Rights Department of the Embassy of Germany, the effects of illegal mining on the environment were scientifically investigated and the results made available to the general public. The conclusions were first presented on December 6 in the community of Santa Rosa, near Yanacachi, and finally on December 9 in La Paz in the presence of the German Ambassador. The Chaski-Fotos published in July already drew attention to the effects of illegal mining. With the results of the analysis, the threat to the environment is now tangible for the local population.
